JRC Being part of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the
European Commission, the Institute for Environment and Sustainability (IES) provides
scientific and technical support to EU policies for the protection of the environment
contributing to a sustainable development in Europe. Among other tasks, the IES
is responsible to define new methods to promote harmonized collection, handling,
assessment and dissemination of spatial data, to set-up a European Spatial Data
Infrastructure and to provide support to national civil protection activities,
in particular for weather driven natural hazards. This justifies the high interest
of the JRC in the SAFIR results. The foreseen new technologies and new services
could significantly modernize civil protection practices, improve the coordination
in cross border areas (through common multi-lingual platforms) and increase citizens'
security within the enlarged European Union. |
